24 September 2019

United Nations HQ, New York

This side event aims to apply lessons learned from responding to gender-based violence (GBV) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan to other large and protracted crises.

Representatives from both governments and concerned UN agencies will come together on 24 September on the sidelines of the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly to discuss best practices that can be leveraged to scale up partnerships on GBV response and look into examples of effective strategies to combat GBV in humanitarian settings. UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem will offer remarks on GBV emergency responses that include work on social norms and women's empowerment, working with local organizations and national institutions to sustain anti-GBV efforts and creating data systems to inform planning and strengthen accountability.

The event will take place at UN Headquarters in New York from 18:30 to 20:00 pm.
