This International Day calls on the world to respect sexual and gender diversity, and to uphold the right of all people to live free of violence, persecution, stigma and discrimination.

UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem observed the day with a statement emphasizing that the organization “stands with all members of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) communities worldwide.”

UNFPA called for urgent attention and action to end the widespread human rights abuses committed against LGBTI individuals, those perceived to be LGBTI and their families.
