On 1 Feb 2016, the World Health Organization declared a sudden cluster of microcephaly cases and related neurological malformations an international public health emergency. These cases of neurological issues are related to an outbreak of Zika, a mosquito-borne virus that has been linked to severe neurological complications in developing foetuses as well as Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Since 2015, more than 65 countries have reported evidence of vector-borne Zika virus transmission.
