Angola Humanitarian Emergency

Angola is facing multiple humanitarian crises: Drougts and refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo. An estimated 1.42m people are currently food insecure, with the southern provinces of Cunene, Huila and Namibe particularly affected. El Nino is causing another year of failed harvests. Temporary heavy rains have also elevated the risk of cholera outbreaks and other water-borne diseases. UNFPA focuses on the sexual and reproductive health and protection services of women, girls and adolescents. The refugee influx from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to Angola started in March 2017 due to conflict in DRC, related to postponed elections. UNHCR data indicates that 3.7 million people are displaced in DRC, of which 1.7 million in Kasai, bordering Lunda Norte province of Angola. In Dundo two reception centers were set up and around 33000 refugees are registered. On June 12th, UNHCR has launched a flash appeal, however received donor contributions are few. Dundo, which besides being expensive, is 1,000 km away from the capital Luanda. UNFPA-CO has made two assessments and was able to mobilize CERF and emergency funds. With the received funds it was able to deliver 2,500 Dignity kits were distributed and 88 baby kits.
