At just 15, Amanda* became a mother.
She lives in Estrutural, one of the poorest areas of Brazil’s Federal District, with her mother, Sharlene, a domestic worker raising three children on her own. Like many girls in Brazil, Amanda* faced early motherhood in a cycle marked by poverty, limited access to reproductive health education, and deep-rooted gender, racial, and socioeconomic inequalities.
In 2023, 300,000 adolescent girls experienced an unintended pregnancy in Brazil — including 14,000 girls aged 14 or younger. Most were Black. Early motherhood often limits girls’ education and job opportunities, reinforcing cycles of poverty and inequality.
UNFPA works to break this cycle by strengthening public policies, training professionals, and expanding access to information and services — so girls can make informed choices and build brighter futures.
But we can’t do it without you.
