Suggested Activities for World Population Day

Each year for the past 16 years, UNFPA offices in all parts of the world have raised awareness about important population and development issues by finding creative ways to publicize World Population Day.

  • Attract attention to the message by inviting politicians and celebrities to make public statements and take a leadership role in promoting the participation of young people.

  • Make sure to include young people in the planning and execution of WPD.

  • Organize public contests for posters, essays and plays about the benefits of listening to what young people have to say.

  • Hold workshops, quizzes, debates and seminars. Such events may be organized through the Youth Advisory Panel set up at the country level. Photo exhibit “Chasing the Dream: Youth Faces of the Millennium Development Goals” may be featured at the country level. An electronic version of the exhibit will be made available to the COs in April.

  • Contact the media through press kits and conferences, preparing ‘sound bites’ to convey the message and linking the issue to local examples of youth leadership.

  • Emphasize the benefits to development of investing in education (especially for girls), health and employment for all young people.

  • Highlight the role of young people in achieving the ICPD Programme of Action and the Millennium Development Goals.

  • Analyze the positive steps taken towards youth participation in your country, and identify lessons learned and needed action.

  • Write and publicize success stories about youth-friendly reproductive health projects showing positive results and respect for culture and diversity.
