C O N T E N T S Chapter 1: Chapter 2: Chapter 3: Chapter 4: Chapter 5: |
Adding Years to Life, and Life to Later Years As life expectancies lengthen, so do years of potentially healthy and productive life. The key word is "healthy". So far, although women live longer than men, approaches to health policy often start from the false assumption that after menopause the concerns of women and men converge. This chapter concentrates on health issues especially concerning women, on the understanding that womens health issues in later life have not had their due share of attention. Women live longer than men, and average more years of ill health late in life. Older womens health reflects inadequate access to basic services, food and nutrition throughout their lives, and the hardships of their childbearing years including births too early or too closely spaced, poor nutrition and anaemia.
