Youth Training and Peer Counselling
on Reproductive Health

Box 30

Egypt, the Syrian Arab Republic, Yemen and other countries in the Arab States region have developed innovative approaches to reaching young people that go beyond traditional population education. Several NGOs collaborated in designing a project in Egypt to train youth leaders to conduct peer counselling on reproductive health and gender issues. The trainees, aged 18-25, are expected to play an important role as advocates of adolescents’ rights to reproductive health information and services, as well as in helping young people to make informed decisions about responsible sexual behaviour.

Similar “training of trainers” activities in adolescent reproductive health, gender relations and interpersonal communication have been conducted in Yemen and Syria. Culturally acceptable printed and audio-visual materials about population and adolescent reproductive health have been produced and disseminated as well. Yemen has organized study tours in Egypt and Syria to promote an exchange of shared experiences in integrating reproductive and sexual health and gender awareness training into national youth programmes.
