Strengthening the linkages between sexual and reproductive health and HIV prevention, treatment, care and support is critical to achieving the Millennium Development Goals. This systematic review of the literature on linkages between these two areas was conducted in order to gain a clearer understanding of the effectiveness, optimal circumstances, and best practices for strengthening such links. The findings corroborate the many benefits of linking policies, systems and services related to sexual and reproductive health and HIV.

Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting Accelerating Change

UNFPA and UNICEF are working towards accelerated abandonment of female genital mutilation/ cutting within 17 countries by 2012. The focus of this joint funding proposal is to leverage social dynamics towards abandonment within selected communities that practice FGM/C. As a contribution to the mid-term review of this effort, UNFPA has coordinated a review of progress in 33 countries, which indicates that efforts and technical assistance should be pursued and strengthened, in particular at the district level, and calls for the integration of national Maternal and Newborn Health plans with other national planning and budgeting processes.
