Every year, UNFPA analyses the most up-to-date information from its extensive global Reproductive Health Commodity Security donor database and produces the Donor Support Report. Patterns and trends in donor support to contraceptives and condoms are analyzed. This information and data are also shared publically through the Reproductive Health Supply Coalition website and the report is widely available.
The report showed that donor contributions for contraceptives and condoms for HIV prevention amounted to $223 million in 2007—a 5 per cent increase over the 2006 total of $212 million. This is despite a growing unmet need for such supplies, as more couples use modern methods of contraception and as population continues to increase.
Analyzing the trends
Analysis in Donor Support for Contraceptives and Condoms for STI/HIV Prevention 2008 shows that funding for these supplies has virtually stagnated since 2001, when it peaked at $224 million.
The annual Donor Support for Contraceptives analysis contains a summary and analysis of a UNFPA-managed database that has tracked more than 21,000 procurement records of contraceptives, condoms for HIV prevention and other types of related reproductive health supplies since 1990. Highlights and key messages within the 2008 report include:
- Donor contributions would nearly need to double in order for the current unmet need to be met in 2015.
- Donor support was just under $ 214 million, approximately a 4 per cent decrease from 2007. Donor support has ranged between $ 205 million and $223 since 2003.
- Sub-Saharan Africa received 62 per cent of total support in 2008. Asia and the Pacific region received 25 per cent. Latin America and the Caribbean and Arab States/Eastern Europe received 9 per cent and 4 per cent, respectively.
- Latin America and the Caribbean was the only region which saw an increase ($ 16 million in 2007 to $ 19 million in 2008). While support for Sub-Saharan Africa was down less than 1 per cent as compared to 2007, Asia and the Pacific region and Arab States/Eastern Europe region both experienced major declines in donor support (12 per cent and 25 per cent declines respectively as compared to 2007).
The Donor Support Database for Contraceptives and Condoms for STI/HIV Prevention
The Donor Support Database for Contraceptives and Condoms for STI/HIV Prevention contains country-specific information reported by donors on the type, quantity and the total cost of contraceptives they provide to reproductive health programmes in developing countries. Based on the analysis of this data, reports are prepared on an annual basis and used for contraceptive supply planning, advocacy, resource mobilization. The database is especially useful for anticipating shortfalls and changes in funding by donor and country.
