Dr. George Tembo

Dr. George Tembo, Chief of the HIV/AIDS Branch at UNFPA, has over 20 years experience in the field of HIV/AIDS. Prior to joining UNFPA, Dr. Tembo served as Chief of the Country and Regional Support Division at UNAIDS in Geneva. He also served as Chief of the Aid Effectiveness Division and as Associate Director in the Country Performance and Analysis Department.

Dr. Tembo is a Public Health Physician who studied medicine at the University of Zambia and Public Health at Yale University. He worked as a lecturer in Public Health at the University of Zambia while also serving as an Epidemiologist in the Zambia AIDS Control Programme. In 1990, Dr. Tembo worked as an Epidemiologist with the World Health Organization's Global Programme on AIDS in Uganda. He joined UNAIDS five years later as the first UNAIDS Country Coordinator posted to Africa, based in Kenya. He was transferred to Zimbabwe in 1999 where he served in the same capacity for four years. Dr. Tembo moved to UNAIDS in Geneva in 2003, where he served until he joined UNFPA earlier this year.
