Background

Since 2003, UNFPA and the Population Reference Bureau have collaborated in publishing Country Profiles for Population and Reproductive Health: Policy Developments and Indicators for use by country offices, policy makers and researchers.

Each counry profile is followed by more than 100 indicators on health and development, including internal disparities, public financing for health and education, and progress toward meeting the MDGs. The regional overviews and indicators provide snapshots of the most important population and reproductive health challenges in each part of the world.

Data sources

Information on social and political contexts and policy priorities has been obtained from UNFPA country offices and standard United Nations reports. Indicators are provided for both the reference year - generally 1990 - and the most recent year for which data are available. Symbols indicate those indicators that are used for tracking progress toward ICPD or MDG targets. Technical notes detail the specific data sources and provide guidance for the interpretation of the statistics.
