Synthesis of Strategic Information on HIV and Young People

This report shows that global commitments to reverse the AIDS epidemic will be achieved only if the unique needs of young women and men are acknowledged, and their human rights fulfilled, respected, and protected. In order to reduce new HIV infections among young people, achieve the broader equity goals set out in the MDGs, and begin to reverse the overall HIV epidemic, HIV prevention and treatment efforts must be tailored to the specific needs of young people. The legal and policy barriers that prevent young people from accessing HIV services must be addressed, and young people should be engaged more effectively in the response.

Highlights of 2011

Annual Report 2011 for the UNFPA/UNICEF Joint Programme on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting

The Joint Programme on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting is being carried out in 15 African countries: Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Senegal, Somalia and Sudan. The 2011 annual report highlights the gains, challenges and best practices for the abandonment of FGM/C and offers select indicators on progress in policy and advocacy, capacity building, partnerships and media coverage. FGM/C campaign highlights in 2011 included a West African fatwa against cutting, Guinea-Bissau’s criminalization of FGM/C and the high rate of abandonment in Senegal, where 760 communities declared an end to cutting and child/forced marriage.

This e-publication highlights the results of a survey of women clients of microfinance institutions in 14 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, with a special focus on the effects of the social services provided by those institutions. It  finds that microfinance, when offered in conjunction with health education services, can both empower women and improve their sexual and reproductive health.

It is being released in advance to enable countries to use the information for Madrid+10 reporting purposes. The report provides an overview of existing policies, legislation, data, research and institutional arrangements to show progress since the Second World Assembly on Ageing in 2002.
