Global Programme to Enhance Reproductive Health Commodity Security Annual Report 2011

UNFPA established the Global Programme to Enhance Reproductive Health Commodity Security in 2007 as a framework for assisting countries in planning for their own needs. As this report documents, progress in the five years since the programme was launched has been very significant. The Global Programme has mobilized $450 million since 2007. While the trend towards greater emphasis on capacity development continues,support to reproductive health commodities through the GPRHCS 2008-2011 includes contraceptives worth 56 million couple-years of protection. Within UNFPA, the Global Programme worked in collaboration with the Maternal Health Thematic Fund to provide programmatic support to ensure that life-saving maternal health drugs and supplies were available in all facilities. The GPRHCS also worked closely with the HIV/AIDS Branch to increase the availability of contraceptives in countries with high HIV prevalence and among vulnerable populations.

Trends in Maternal Mortality:1990-2010

Globally, the total number of maternal deaths decreased by from 543 000 in 1990 to 287 000 in 2010. Likewise,  the global maternal mortality ratio (MMR) declined from 400 maternal deaths per 100 000 live births in 1990 to 210 in 2010, representing an average annual decline of 3.1 per cent. All developing regions experienced a decline in MMR between 1990 and 2010, with the highest reduction in the 20-year period in Eastern Asia (69 per cent) followed by Northern Africa (66 per cent), Southern Asia (64 per cent), Sub-Saharan Africa (41 per cent), Latin America and the Caribbean (41 per cent), Oceania (38 per cent) and finally Caucasus and Central Asia (35 per cent). Although the latter region experienced the lowest decline, its already low MMR of 71 maternal deaths per 100 000 live births in 1990 made it more challenging to achieve the same decline as another region with a higher 1990 MMR value.

The State of the World's Midwifery 2011

Delivering Health, Saving Lives

Increasing women's access to quality midwifery has become a focus of global efforts to realize the right of every woman to the best possible health care during pregnancy and childbirth. A first step is assessing the situation.This comprehensive report, supported by 30 partners, provides the first comprehensive analysis of midwifery services and issues in countries where the needs are greatest. The report provides new information and data gathered from 58 countries in all regions of the world. Its analysis confirms that the world lacks some 350,000 skilled midwives -- 112,000 in the neediest 38 countries surveyed -- to fully meet the needs of women around the world. The report explores a range of issues related to building up this key health workforce.

Campaign to End Fistula: The Year In Review

Annual Report 2008

The global Campaign to End Fistula, spearheaded by UNFPA, has delivered significant results in 2008, as part of a broader effort to improve maternal health through support for fistula prevention, treatment and reintegration. This report documents the Campaign’s tremendous growth – from 12 to now 47 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Arab States region. It assesses achievements and lessons learned both in 2008 and over the course of the Campaign.

Global Consultation on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting

This publication contains rich research findings concerning global trends and the prevalence of female genital mutilation/cutting and its linkages with maternal and newborn health. It describes changing patterns and practices, including medicalization, and analyzes the threat FGM/C poses to the achievement of Millennium Development Goals as well as its economic and health costs. It identifies important lessons and discusses in detail case studies as well as the application of theories as a basis for accelerating the abandonment process.

Report of the Africa Regional Fistula Meeting

Accra, Ghana, 29 June – 1 July 2004

From 29 June to 1 July 2004, UNFPA hosted the second Africa Regional Meeting on Obstetric Fistula, in Accra, Ghana. The conference brought together over 90 participants from 26 countries, including UNFPA staff, government officials, non-governmental organizations, and some of the world's foremost experts in obstetric fistula. The conference took place against a backdrop of rapidly growing worldwide interest in the management of obstetric fistula and was held within the framework of the Campaign to End Fistula, launched by UNFPA in 2003 and which includes a number of partners at global and national levels.

South Asia Conference for the Prevention and Treatment of Obstetric Fistula

9-11 December 2003 • Dhaka, Bangladesh

This conference on obstetric fistula, the first of its kind in South Asia, sparked important dialogue and action on the issue and is an indispensable first step towards ending fistula in the region. The conference brought together more than 50 participants from around the world including Dr. Nafis Sadik, Special Ambassador for Fistula, UNFPA staff from Bangladesh, India, Nepal and New York, officials from the Bangladesh Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, representatives from WHO and EngenderHealth, fistula surgeons and other health care professionals from Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Pakistan. The UNFPA Bangladesh Country Office hosted the conference in collaboration with the Technical Support Division (TSD) and the Asia and Pacific Division (APD) of UNFPA Headquarters in New York.
