Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin

Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations

On 1 January 2011, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, a physician and public health expert, became only the fourth Executive Director of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund. He holds the rank of Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. Before this appointment, Dr. Osotimehin was Nigeria’s Minister of Health. Prior to that, he was Director-General of Nigeria’s National Agency for the Control of AIDS, which coordinates HIV and AIDS work in a country of more than 160 million people.

Countdown of the Last 1,000 Days to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals in 2015

5 April 2013 marks the start of the countdown of the last 1,000 days to achieve the Millennium Development Goals in 2015. The Executive Director of UNFPA, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin said in a statement that we have a cause to celebrate the successes achieved around the world, but we must also urgently ramp up our work, resources and actions in areas that are lagging behind. In 2000, the world pledged to reduce maternal deaths by three quarters by 2015 from their 1990 levels through MDG 5. more

UNFPA welcomes the historic agreement by the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, which clearly reinforces the international community’s commitment to strengthen efforts to eliminate and prevent all forms of violence against women and girls. Calling for an End to the Many Forms of Violence Against Women and Girls

NEW YORK -- On day two of the Commission for the Status of Women, the halls of United Nations headquarters were filled with government officials, and representatives of the UN, civil society, media and the private sector. An unprecedented 6,000 representatives of civil society registered to attend the UN meeting this year — a preponderance of them women. In the official proceedings and numerous side events participants reviewed progress, shared experiences and best practices, analysed gaps and challenges and discussed priority actions to accelerate progress on violence against women, the theme of this year's Commission. more

Statement by the Executive Director to the Executive Board

In his statement to the Executive Board, Dr. Osotimehin highlighted achievments from 2012 and laid out the priorities for UNFPA in the year ahead. Topics discussed in his statment include the ICPD beyond 2014 and MDG post 2015 process, UNFPA's Strategic Plan 2014-2017, the integrated budget including cost recovery, thematic areas such as family planning, adolescents and youth, the gir child, ageing, humanitarian response and staff security.
