Overview

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, with a total fertility rate of 2.2 lifetime births per woman and a population growth rate of 0.83 per cent per annum, has one of the lowest levels of poverty among South Asian countries. The impact of armed conflict in the north and east of the country for nearly two decades is gradually receding. However, levels of poverty tend to vary widely throughout the country. A major challenge in Sri Lanka is to meet the needs of young people along with those of an ageing population. Currently, 18 per cent of the population of 20.7 million is between the ages of 15 and 24. However, access to youth friendly reproductive health information and services is limited. Sri Lanka is also ageing at a rapid pace and by the year 2025, roughly one person in five will be over 60 years of age. The Well Women's Clinic programme through the national health system, provides reproductive health care to women over the age of 35.
