UNFPA Worldwide: Population, Health & Socio-Economic Indicators / Policy Developments

Overview

So Tom and Principe

The island nation of So Tom and Principe relies heavily on imports for most consumer goods and a substantial amount of food. Considered one of 49 least developed countries, the total population is currently 157,000. Over 70 per cent of children are enrolled in primary schools, with near gender parity (girls-to-boys ratio was 0.92 in 2000). The average life expectancy is 63 years. With total fertility averaging 4.4 lifetime births per woman and the prevalence of modern contraceptive methods approaching 30 per cent, the country's annual population growth rate is 2.2 per cent. Deteriorating social conditions could be reversed through coordinated investment planning guided by the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper, the country's qualification for debt relief, revenues from oil production, and diversified agricultural production and tourism.
