UNFPA Worldwide: Population, Health & Socio-Economic Indicators / Policy Developments

Overview

Liberia
Years of civil war have led to widespread poverty and a deepening humanitarian crisis in Liberia, a least developed country with a population of 3.3 million. High unemployment, illiteracy, and increasing HIV/AIDS infection rates result from internal displacement and migration. The infant mortality rate (137 deaths per 1000 live births), maternal mortality ratio (760 deaths per 100,000 live births) and total fertility rate (6.8 lifetime births per woman) are among the highest in the world.
