UNFPA Worldwide: Population, Health & Socio-Economic Indicators / Policy Developments

Overview

Botswana

Botswana, with an estimated population of 1.8 million, is ranked as a middle-income country, but a third of its population live on less than a dollar a day. The government has intensified efforts to diversify the economy by expanding non-mining sectors. The HIV/AIDS prevalence rate is one of the highest in the world -- 37 per cent of the 15-49 age group are HIV positive. This has stalled development and reversed health gains. For example, life expectancy decreased from 65 years in 1990 to 35 years in 2005 while the infant mortality rate has held steady at 47 deaths per 1000 live births.
