“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a literary giant who has influenced generations of readers, both in Africa and worldwide,” said UNFPA Executive Director, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin. “Mr. Achebe will forever be credited for his leading role in shaping the course of Africa’s literary traditions and for conveying its authentic voice to the world at large.”

Mr. Achebe, a great believer in the United Nations, served as UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador from 1999 until 2005. He considered education and poverty alleviation as the solution for Africa’s socio-economic problems, and that people need to be involved in resolving problems affecting their lives.

“The death of Mr. Achebe deprives UNFPA of a great supporter and friend,” said Dr. Osotimehin. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family, his country, Nigeria, and his admirers around the world.”
