Global Meeting to Focus on Importance of Sharing Responsibility between Women and Men

UNITED NATIONS, New York — "The equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including caregiving in the context of HIV/AIDS," will be the focus of the Commission on the Status of Women, which will convene here from 2-13 March. During the gathering, representatives of countries, United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations from all regions will share lessons and good practices related to the subject, and suggest additional key initiatives to enhance the sharing of responsibilities. The gathering will also address the implementation of the commitments that countries made at the 1995 World Conference on Women in Beijing.

As part of the event, UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, and its partners will organize a number of activities to underline the importance of sharing responsibilities between women and men, which would promote women’s equality and human rights. These events include:

Tuesday, 3 March

1-- Side Event Panel Discussion: “Women and Men Sharing Responsibility in Prevention: A discussion on Female and Male Condoms”. The event is led by UNFPA, in collaboration with the Center for Health and Gender Equity (CHANGE).

When: 10 – 11:30 a.m.

2-- Side Event Panel Discussion: “Shared Responsibility between Women and Men to Advance Sexual and Reproductive Health”. Led by UNFPA, the event will include representatives of Member States and civil society, including Microcredit Summit Campaign, International Planned Parenthood Federation and the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS.

Wednesday, 4 March

1-- Plenary Meeting: Statement of UNFPA Executive Director on the linkages between the 15th Anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development and the Beijing Platform for Action.

When: 3 p.m.

2-- Side Event Panel Discussion: “Equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including caregiving in the context of HIV/AIDS.” The event is organized by UNAIDS and its co-sponsors, including UNFPA, as well civil society organizations.

When: 3 – 5 p.m.

Thursday, 5 March

Film Screening: “A Powerful Noise”
A documentary film about women’s empowerment, portraying the lives of three women from Mali, Bosnia and Viet Nam. The event will include a panel discussion.

When: 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, 12 March

Plenary Panel Discussion: “Gender Perspectives on Global Public Health: Implementing the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals”. The panel will include Dr. Hedia Belhadj, UNFPA Executive Coordinator for Global Public Health.
