Beijing +20: Commission on the Status of Women 2015

The Commission on the Status of Women is the United Nations body dedicated to evaluating progress on the empowerment of women and the advancement of gender equality. The Commission is meeting for its 59th session to discuss the implementation of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the global roadmap towards achieving gender equality. International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation

The sixth of February is the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, a day to raise awareness of the practice and to work towards its elimination. Female genital mutilation involves altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It is a human rights violation, and can cause short- and long-term health complications, including chronic pain, infections, complications in childbirth, and infertility. UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.   24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a public holiday. Details
