ICPD 5-year Review and Appraisal

Progress and challenges in implementing strategies
on population and development will be the focus of
world leaders at a Special Session of the United
Nations General Assembly when it meets 30 June-2
July 1999, according to a General Assembly
resolution adopted on 18 December 1997.

The Special Session, which will take place some five
years after the International Conference on
Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, Egypt,
will provide a forum for world leaders to review and
appraise implementation of the Programme of Action,
which emerged from the 1994 Conference.

From now through June 1999, UNFPA will sponsor a
series of review-related activities that will involve
many of our partners--programme countries, donor
countries, the United Nations System and
representatives of civil society, including NGOs and
the private sector.

The review will culminate in an international forum, to
be convened in The Hague, The Netherlands, on
8-12 February 1999. (An NGO Forum on ICPD
implementation will be held prior to the Hague
Forum.)
