Five Year-review of the International
Conference on Population and Development
WELCOME
TO Issue No. 1
of the ICPD+5 News Bulletin on UNFPA-organized activities relating
to the five-year review of the International Conference on Population
and Development (ICPD). The News Bulletin is a monthly feature
produced for NGOs, their networks, and other partners interested
in the activities and events leading up to The Hague Forum on
ICPD implementation on 8-12 February 1999; and the General Assembly
Special Session on the review and appraisal of the implementation
of the ICPD Programme of Action in New York on 30 June-2 July,
1999.
The
News Bulletin will include information like meeting dates; venues;
contacts; news media events; and logistical information on The
Hague Forum and Special Session. To receive the News Bulletin,
please send us your email, fax or office address and we will
add you to the list of subscribers.
RECENT
AND UPCOMING MEETINGS
25-27
March: A "High-level Meeting to Review the Implementation
of the Programme of Action of the ICPD and the Bali Declaration
on Population and Sustainable Development and to Make Further
Recommendations for Further Action" was held in Bangkok.
The meeting was convened by the Economic and Social Commission
for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and UNFPA. Copies of the final
draft report and key future actions required to achieve the
goals of the ICPD Programme of Action and Bali Declaration;
and an ESCAP Commission resolution on "Mobilization of
human and financial resources for further implementation of
actions to achieve the population and development goals of the
ESCAP region" will be available from the Population Division/ESCAP.

April: A round table on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive
Health and Rights: Assessing the Impact of the ICPD was held
at the Ford Foundation in New York. The final report from that
meeting, which identifies successes; constraints; and key future
actions for the further implementation of the Programme of Action
in this area will be available by mid-June. The report will
be posted on the UNFPA ICPD+5 web page at that time. The agenda;
participants list; and news items about the round table
are currently posted on the web page.
13-14
May: The Economic Commission for Latin America and
the Caribbean (ECLAC) and UNFPA will convene a regional review
on ICPD in Aruba. Details on the meeting are available through
ECLAC, which is based in Santiago, Chile. ECLAC telephone and

22-25
June: A round table on Reproductive Rights and Implementation
of Reproductive Health Programmes, Womens Empowerment,
Male Involvement and Human Rights will take place in Kampala,
Uganda. The agenda; participants list; and background
on the round table will be available on the web page prior to
the meeting.

June-3 July: A Technical Symposium on International Migration
and Development will be held in The Hague. The meeting of technical
experts is an activity of the Working Group on International
Migration of the Task Force on Basic Social Services for All,
a U.N. inter-agency body. The final report from the meeting
will be available in the summer through UNFPA.
27-30
July: A round table on Participation with Civil Society
in the Implementation of the Programme of Action will take place
in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The agenda; participants list; and
background on the round table will be available on the UNFPA
ICPD+5 web page prior to the meeting.
PRE-HAGUE
FORUM EVENTS
A
Youth and NGO Forum; and a global parliamentarian meeting will
be held prior to the 8-12 February 1999 Hague Forum. Tentative
dates for these meeting are 5-6 February, 1999. Both meetings
will be held at the same site as The Hague Forum: Netherlands
Congress Centre, Churchillplein 10, P.O. Box 82000, 2508 EA,
The Hague, The Netherlands. The World Population Foundation
(WPF), a Dutch NGO, is the local facilitator for organizations
interested in participating in the Youth and NGO Forum. WPF
