Working from a Base of Solid Evidence
Programming efforts should be informed by solid evidence of what works and what doesn't Interventions designed for adult populations may not reach most young people and may be less effective when they do. Building on programming that actually reaches and affects young people is crucial if global targets for preventing HIV are to be met.
A 2004 global consultation on prevention programmes for young people identified those interventions whose effectiveness is backed by strong evidence. The challenge now is to expand coverage of such interventions and to measure the degree to which these are reaching young people.
UNFPA is currently working with The Futures Group on a multi-country study on coverage of HIV prevention interventions targeted at young people. By determining the level of young people's access to effective interventions to prevent HIV infection, UNFPA and partners can strengthen evidence-informed advocacy in support of political and financial commitment to scale up effective programmes and provide a successful model for monitoring progress towards achieving the UNGASS targets.
