Nicaragua

As a result of data collected by UNFPA and related dialogue with the government, population dynamics, particularly the issues of population age structures and the demographic bonus, and their interaction with poverty, achieved a much greater visibility in the government’s social and economic policy documents, including the PRSP and the National Development Plan. With UNFPA and UNICEF’s help, Nicaragua developed a national youth policy that integrates reproductive health into a broader framework of citizenship, peer education and political participation. Following a nationwide consultation with adolescents, the government integrated their reproductive health needs into its PRSP, becoming the first country in the world to do so.
