UNFPA in Action
A gender-sensitive approach HIV prevention is one of UNFPA’s priorities. As one of ten sponsors of UNAIDS, UNFPA is engaged in a collaborative response aimed at preventing HIV transmission, providing care and support, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV, and alleviating the impact of the epidemic. Within this joint effort, UNFPA has lead responsibilities in the area of condom procurement and programming.
UNFPA recently collaborated on the report Women and HIV/AIDS: Confronting the Crisis, which outlines immediate actions needed to address the specific needs of women. Action items include:
- Support HIV-positive women and their organizations and networks
- Make AIDS money work for women
- Ensure that adolescent girls and women have the knowledge and means to prevent HIV infection
- Ensure equal and universal access to treatment
- Promote girls’ primary and secondary education and women’s literacy
- Recognize and support home-based caregivers of AIDS patients and orphans
- Promote zero tolerance of all forms of violence against women and girls
- Promote and protect the human rights of women and girls
