Opening Segment of the 51st session of the Commission on Population and Development

09 Avril 2018

United Nations Headquarters, New York

This session of the Commission on Population and Development will centre around two key megatrends: migration and urbanization.

Migration – both within countries and between countries – is reshaping the global landscape and economic development. Urbanization, too, is transforming the world, with an increasing number of urban dwellers driving and changing local and national economies. These trends are closely linked, with migrants drawn to the opportunities available in urban areas.

Yet there are major human rights implications for both of these trends. Women and girl migrants face major risks and challenges during transit and relocation, and they face unique barriers to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights in urban settings.
