En mars 2015, une crise politique prolongée opposant les forces du gouvernement du Yémen et leurs alliés aux groupes rebelles s’est muée en crise humanitaire nationale. Puis, en novembre 2015, deux cyclones meurtriers ont dévasté les régions côtières du pays.

En février 2016, 21,1 millions de personnes, soit 80 % de la population, nécessitaient une aide humanitaire, parmi lesquelles 2,9 millions de femmes et de filles en âge de procréer, dont environ 500 000 étaient enceintes.

En collaboration avec ses partenaires, l’UNFPA fournit des services de santé, de l’équipement médical et des médicaments aux femmes et aux filles yéménites et distribue des trousses d’hygiène féminine et des kits de santé reproductive. Le Fonds apporte également son appui aux services chargés de prévenir et d’endiguer la violence basée sur le genre, qui est extrêmement répandue dans cette région en proie à l’instabilité. Parmi ces services figurent la prise en charge clinique du viol, le soutien psychosocial et la mise à disposition d’espaces sécurisés. Qui plus est, l’organisation s’emploie à garantir l’acheminement des produits de santé des ports du pays jusqu’à leur destination finale.
