Refugees exiting Kosovo during the fighting.

At the main Maternity Hospital in Pristina, capital of Kosovo, doctors deliver 30 babies every day, about 12,000 a year. This is one of the highest delivery rates in Europe.
New born infants are lined up in a special room in the maternity ward.
Before the Maternity Hospital in Pristina received new equipment and supplies, nearly 50% of premature infants, such as this one, did not survive. With better equipment and care, the infant mortality rate has been reduced significantly.
A shortage of equipment has hampered operations in the Maternity Hospital in Pristina. Equipment donated by UNFPA allowed doctors to save lives. Here is a new incubator.  The old one was out of commission for six months.
Children are a particularly vulnerable group during crisis situations.
A long line of lorries with emergency supplies, including reproductive health kits provided by UNFPA, wait at the  main border crossing between Albania and Kosovo.
