The United Nations Population Fund - UNFPA
in Jordan
Reproductive
Health
including Family Planning and Sexual Health
UNFPA’s
programme concentrates in the poorer regions of the
country, particularly around the Dead Sea and in the
north on the border with Syria and Israel. UNFPA’s
programme concentrates in five main areas:
- Improving the
quality of reproductive health services utilized by
women and men in primary health care facilities;
- Increasing demand
for quality reproductive health services;
- Increasing access to
reliable reproductive health information and
counseling for women, men and youth;
- Strengthening the
national capacity to manage, monitor and evaluate
reproductive health services offered to the public,
private and NGO sectors; and
- Increasing the
political commitment as well as the technical
capacity for implementing, monitoring and updating
the country’s National Population Strategy.
To support
these objectives, UNFPA has helped the national
government develop a national reproductive health
strategy and has provided support to improve the quality
and content of pre-service education in medical schools,
midwife programmes and diploma nursing programmes. The
Fund has also assisted the Ministry of Health to develop
appropriate IEC (Information, Education and
Communication) materials aimed at different audiences.
More
recently, efforts have centered on empowering women to
take a more active role in family and community life. In
this regard, UNFPA works with two major NGOs: the
Hashemite Fund for Human Development and the Noor
Al-Hussein Foundation.
Population
and Development
UNFPA’s
efforts in this area are concentrated on assisting the
government implement its National Population Policy in
three areas: gender equality, IEC and quality
reproductive health care.
The Fund
has been instrumental in promoting gender equality and
the empowerment of women by working with the Jordanian
National Committee for Women and by supporting the work
of national NGOs.
Advocacy
UNFPA’s
advocacy work aims at assisting the government in the
following areas:
-
Mobilizing
support for population and reproductive health
programmes, including services for men and
adolescents;
-
Providing
information and services designed for adolescents
-
Empowering
women.
Another important area is UNFPA’s support for the
National Parliamentary Committee on Population and
Development. This Committee works to revise and pass
legislation in support of the goals and objectives of the
National Population Strategy.
UNFPA also works with the government and leading NGOs in
an effort to improve women’s rights and access to
reproductive health information and services.
