87/32.  Implementation of the strategy for United Nations Fund for Population Activities assistance to sub-Saharan Africa

   The Governing Council

   Recalling its decision 86/34/I of 27 June 1986, requesting the Executive Director of the United Nations Fund for Population Activities to present a strategy for United Nations Fund for Population Activities assistance to sub-Saharan Africa,

   Having considered with appreciation the report of the Executive Director on the strategy for the United Nations Fund for Population Activities assistance in sub-Saharan Africa as contained in document DP/1987/37,

   Cognizant of the urgent need for African countries to pursue and implement population policies and promote population awareness with a view to achieving balance between population growth and resources, development and environment,

   Emphasizing, therefore, the need for substantial bilateral and multilateral technical and financial assistance for African countries,

   1.  Notes with satisfaction the objectives and goals set out in the strategy by the United Nations Fund for Population Activities for sub-Saharan Africa in the area of population activities and the need to implement the strategy;

   2.  Requests the Executive Director to increase both human and financial resources to African countries for the successful implementation of the strategy and to that end urges all countries that are able to do so to increase their contributions in 1987 and future years, and to make their contribution payments as early as possible in the year for which the pledge is made; and further requests the Executive Director to report to the thirty-fifth session (1988) of the Governing Council on steps taken, as well as short and long-term requirements;

   3.  Requests also the Executive Director to support and strengthen training institutions in Africa in the area of population policy and development and to assist Governments in setting up training programmes for mid and lower-level managers at national and sub-regional levels;

   4.  Requests further the Executive Director to increase support, at the request of African Governments, for innovative projects initiated or implemented by non-governmental organizations and in particular national non-governmental organizations.
