The Big Debate - Maternal Health: Why are Women Still Dying?

25 September 2013

UN Headquarters, New York

Every day, 800 women and girls die of pregnancy and delivery-related complications. Although maternal deaths have almost halved globally in the last two decades, Millennium Development Goal 5 (MDG5), to improve maternal health, is one of the MDGs that lags furthest behind.

What are the main obstacles for countries trying to reduce maternal deaths? Why are some regions more successful than other?

UNFPA in partnership with the South African Broadcast Corporation, SABC TV "Big Debate" series, will bring together a high-level panel to discuss what needs to be done to accelerate the achievement of MDG5 and to reduce maternal deaths by 2015 and beyond.

When: Wednesday, 25 September 2013, 7-8 p.m.
Where: Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium, UN Headquarters
