UNFPA Co-Hosts Workshop on Gender

GENEVA UNFPA and UNHCR co-hosted an interactive session on masculinity, sexual and gender based violence and HIV/AIDS in the International Environment House. The event was a part of the international campaign to end violence against women and was intended to raise awareness of the need for more male involvement if we are to eradicate gender based violence and HIV/AIDS.

The interactive session was facilitated by a South African NGO, Sonke Gender Justice Network. At the workshop, the non-governmental organization launched their new One Man Can Action Initiative and distributed material from the campaigns toolkit.

Danish Minister for Development Hands Out Female Condoms

COPENHAGEN — On the occasion of the World AIDS Day, Ms Ulla Tørnæs, Minister for International Development Cooperation handed out female condoms supplied by the UNFPA Nordic Office to Parliamentarians in the Danish Parliament, Folketinget. By focusing on female condoms the Minister wants to underline the importance of enhancing women’s reproductive health and rights as a mean to combat HIV and AIDS. The condom was enclosed in a leaflet made by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs that presented the hard facts about the feminization of the HIV pandemic. Today more than 5000 young people are infected every day – two thirds of these are women.
