Thirty-first Triennial Congress of the International Confederation of Midwives

This meeting brings together midwifery associations, partners and supporters, with the aim of promoting and strengthening midwifery programmes and associations around the world.  A delegation from UNFPA, including midwives working in the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan, will be attending the Congress. UNFPA aims to raise awarness of the challenges facing midwives in emergency settings, and to support and advance the cause of midwifery in the developing world.  Details

Commemoration of UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin

The Executive Board held a one-hour commemoration ceremony for UNFPA Executive Director, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, on 6 June 2017 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. International Day to End Obstetric Fistula

Obstetric fistula is one of the most serious and tragic injuries that can occur during childbirth. The condition typically leaves women incontinent, as well as subject to infections or other health conditions. Women with fistula are often shunned by their communities. Yet the condition is almost entirely preventable. Its persistence is a sign of global inequality and an indication that health systems are failing to protect the health and human rights of the poorest and most vulnerable women and girls.  Details

International Day of Families

May 15 is the International Day of Families, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 with resolution A/RES/47/237. The day reflects the importance the international community attaches to families. Families are strongest and healthiest when all people are empowered to access health care, acquire an education, contribute to their homes and communities, and realize their full potential. UNFPA supports the rights of all people to live healthy, empowered and fulfilled lives.  Details
