En marzo de 2015, la dilatada crisis política entre las fuerzas gubernamentales de Yemen, sus aliados y los grupos rebeldes desencadenó una crisis humanitaria a escala nacional. En noviembre de 2015, dos ciclones mortíferos destrozaron las zonas costeras del país.

En febrero de 2016, 21,1 millones de personas —el 80% de la población— necesitaban ayuda humanitaria, entre ellas 2,9 millones de mujeres y niñas en edad reproductiva, de las cuales se calcula que 500 000 estaban embarazadas.

El UNFPA está trabajando con sus asociados para proporcionar servicios de salud, equipos y medicación a las mujeres y niñas yemeníes, así como kits de dignidad y de salud reproductiva. El UNFPA también respalda la prestación de servicios para prevenir y hacer frente a la violencia de género, muy frecuente en situaciones de inestabilidad. Entre estos servicios se incluyen el tratamiento clínico de las víctimas de violaciones, el apoyo psicosocial y el acceso a lugares seguros. Asimismo, la organización se esfuerza por garantizar que los suministros de salud que llegan a los puertos del país alcancen su destino final.
