Millones de iraquíes se desplazaron internamente debido a los combates entre las fuerzas gubernamentales y los grupos de oposición armada. Decenas de millares de personas han buscado refugio en Sinyar, una cordillera desértica, desde que la violencia se intensificó en agosto de 2014. La situación de emergencia se vio agravada por la llegada de cientos de miles de refugiados que huían en busca de un lugar seguro a consecuencia de la crisis en la vecina Siria.

El UNFPA favorece la prestación de servicios de atención obstétrica de calidad a las mujeres embarazadas afectadas por la crisis, mediante la distribución de botiquines de salud reproductiva para la atención prenatal y posnatal a hospitales y centros de planificación familiar. También apoya la distribución de suministros de higiene a mujeres y niñas en edad reproductiva. Asimismo, tanto en los dispensarios como en los lugares seguros de los campamentos y los refugios, el Fondo y sus asociados trabajan conjuntamente con el fin de prestar servicios de salud esenciales a las mujeres en edad reproductiva, y respalda la atención psicosocial de las mujeres y niñas que son víctimas de violencia de género o sufren algún trauma.
