Junior Professional Officer Programme

Objectives

UNFPA participates in the Junior Professional Officer (JPO) programme, which is intended to provide on-the-job training for young professionals who wish to pursue a career in development assistance. It gives them an opportunity to acquire professional experience in managing population projects in a developing country. The programme is based on the sponsorship of young professionals, generally under 32 years of age, by their respective governments.

The primary purpose of the programme is to provide exposure to and training in population work. Many former JPOs are now serving in their home country's bilateral assistance programmes, other UN agencies, non-governmental organizations, or in the private sector. Only a small number of outstanding individuals have continued to serve with UNFPA upon the expiration of their JPO contracts. In all cases, participation in a competitive recruitment process is required for regular employment at UNFPA.

Application Procedure

The programme is open to nationals of donor countries and to nationals of developing countries. Applicants should complete a personal history form and submit it to the relevant parties, as follows:

Nationals of donor countries should apply directly to the authorities in their country (except nationals of Canada and The Netherlands). The list of donor countries and their contact details are found below.

Canadian and Dutch nationals and candidates from developing countries should apply directly to UNFPA at a time when JPO vacancies are advertised specifically for these nationals. The advertisements will appear in the local media in Canada and the Netherlands and on our vacancy web site at UNFPA.org/employment.
