Dire situations in some of the world's most devastated
countries demand concerted international action. In launching
the Humanitarian Appeal 2010, the United Nations is calling on
donors for US $7.1 billion to address the urgent humanitarian
needs of millions of people in some of the world's most severe crises.
UNFPA's portion of the appeal is $49,401,057 for projects to address the
urgent reproductive health needs of refugees, internally displaced persons and
others affected by conflict or natural disaster. The aim is to prevent pregnancy-related
deaths, HIV infection, sexual violence and other reproductive health problems that often accompany a crisis.
AFGHANISTAN
1. Decades of war and frequent natural disasters have taken their toll on infrastructure, livelihood opportunities and access to basic services. This has left the country with some of the most alarming health indicators in the world, particularly affecting women, children and the internally displaced.

CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC (CAR)
1. An armed rebellion, a bankrupt government and the spillover effects of civil conflicts in
bordering Darfur (Sudan) and Chad have combined to create a 'perfect storm' in the Central
African Republic (CAR).

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
3. Clashes between government forces and armed opposition groups continue to spread instability and displacement among populations in the east, which has led to an increase in human rights violations, food insecurity, high mortality and morbidity rates, and cases of sexual violence.

OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY
5. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza, characterized by accelerating poverty, devastated commercial infrastructure and virtually no access to commodities, is worse now than ever before. The result has been the meltdown of essential services, including the health sector.

SOMALIA
6. Continuous civil war, prolonged drought, the impact of global recession and an increase in needs across nearly all humanitarian sectors have made 2009 an especially difficult year for the millions of Somalis in desperate need of international donor support.

UGANDA
7. Continued humanitarian and recovery programmes are needed to support the progress made since the the 2006 Cessation of Hostilities agreement between the Government of Uganda and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). However, sustainable progress depends on meeting the needs of the two million Ugandans still living in crowded, unsanitary displacement camps with limited access to health services and at great risk of disease, malnutrition, and sexual abuse and exploitation.

WEST AFRICA
8. Poverty, disease, natural disaster and the lingering effects of years of conflict continue to undermine the health and security of millions of people living in West Africa. Maternal mortality is high and displaced women and children in many places are extremely vulnerable to sexual violence and exploitation, increasing their exposure to HIV.

YEMEN
9. The escalation of armed conflict between the Government and Houthi rebels have exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation in Yemen. 2010 will mark the first consolidated appeal for a country that faces chronic underdevelopment, widespread poverty, food insecurity, weak infrastructure, high gender disparities, and a displaced population numbering 150,000 people.

ZIMBABWE
10. In light of positive political and socioeconomic developments, there is reason for cautious optimism in Zimbabwe. Nevertheless, millions still require food assistance in a country with the fourth-highest crude mortality rate in Africa and a 13.7 percent prevalence of HIV/AIDS. Access to safe water and sanitation, which greatly contributed to the cholera epidemic of 2009, will continue to be of concern in 2010.
