SOMALIA — One of the least developed countries in the world, Somalia has been fraught with chronic instability and civil war since the fall of the government in 1991. Since then, Somalia has never had a central government.  There are few opportunities for education, health, or diversion.  Against the backdrop of this divided landscape, young footballers and their supporters have shown the potential of their generation.  By coming together peacefully in the spirit of competition, youth who have known only insecurity have set an example for the region. more...

UNFPA Assists Displaced Families in Gaza Strip

GAZA — On the 27 March at about 9.30 am, a basin of sewage burst its banks and flooded part of the Bedouin village of Um Al Nasser, in northern Gaza Strip, with 5000 inhabitants (700 families). In the disaster, two children and three women were killed and a further 24 were injured. Over 2000 persons – 333 families – were left homeless and were evacuated from the flooded village. more...

South Caucasus Joins the Fight Against HIV/AIDS on World AIDS Day

TBILISI, Georgia — Thousands of young people including artists, photographers, prominent singers and actors from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia gathered here to commemorate World AIDS Day.

The South Caucasus Youth Festival was among the largest of the World AIDS Day activities that took place around the world. It was organized by and for young people within the framework of the new Reproductive Health Initiative for Youth in South Caucasus, which is a partnership led by UNFPA and the European Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development, with the support of the European Union. more...

UNFPA Observes 2006 International Day of Older Persons in Turkmenistan

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan - Turkmenistan's seniors were acknowledged in two days of festivities organized by the UNFPA in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Welfare of Turkmenistan. The event commemorated International Day of Older Persons. The celebration began on 30 September 2006 at Ayna restaurant with over 200 participants.

The opening ceremony included warm speeches by the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare and representatives of UNFPA, including the reading of a message from UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid.
