Events and Activities
The Culture, Gender and Human Rights Branch in collaboration with the Learning and Career Management Branch organized a workshop on "Mediating Change through Culturally Sensitive Approaches", Training of Trainers, in Nairobi, Kenya from October 10-13, 2005. The workshop was implemented to test the cultural training materials and incorporate constructive feedback from participants to improve the quality and relevance of future trainings and capacity building of UNPFA staff and partners.
There were 16 participants at the workshop, 10 participants represented the Center for African Family Studies (CAFS), 5 participants from the UNFPA- CST offices in the Africa region and a National Programme Officer from the UNFPA Nairobi office. /p>
The training curricula consisted of two modules, with the following objectives:
- To provide knowledge on the impact of political,
social, cultural and economic factors on development programming,
especially in human rights and gender programming;
- To be able to identify and analyse the tension
between human rights and gender standards and cultural norms and
practices;
- To introduce the different facets of the "Culture
Lens" and the knowledge and skills needed to acquire it;
- To be able to apply knowledge and skills gained
through the culture lens to the different phases of the programme
cycle; and
- To evaluate the curricula and learning tools provided by this
training workshop
The training materials were presented in a very interactive format through role plays, case studies, storytelling and group work and were very well received by the participants and the curricula were evaluated as "innovative", "extremely participatory and interactive", and a "good learning methodology" for "learning by doing." The participants enriched the curricula by "Africanising it" with examples of stories from Africa which will be incorporated into future trainings.
