UNFPA Goodwill Ambassadors

Hanne-Vibeke Holst

Catarina Furtado

Hanne-Vibeke Holst is a popular Danish columnist, tv journalist and best-selling fiction writer. Her novels deal with modern women, their new options and old problems, in a complex world of challenge, freedom and love. Hanne-Vibeke’s books are translated into several languages, including German, Dutch and Swedish.

In her home country, Hanne-Vibeke is known and respected as an outspoken advocate for women's rights as well as for the building of a global, common conscience in the 21st century. In 2003, Hanne-Vibeke won the Søren Gyldendal Award. Gyldendal literature director, Johannes Riis, said of Holst’s selection: “An authorship which, first and foremost, deals with gender and fate, Hanne-Vibeke Holst has investigated the theme of power relations between the two genders – with all its implications and overtones – with greater and greater commitment and aptitude.” Gyldendal is the largest Danish publishing house.

Hanne-Vibeke serves on the Board of Governors of the Danish Family Planning Association and is a personal appointed member of the Danish UNESCO National Commission.

Hanne-Vibeke has written in-depth articles on women's issues for UNFPA, including two stories about her visits to Uganda and Zambia as the designated journalist accompanying several Danish Parliamentarians during January, 2000.

Articles and Activities

  • November 2006
  • Hanne joined the three other Nordic Goodwill Ambassadors in a tour of Mozambique to learn more about UNFPA programmes and to meet some of the women, men, young people and children who benefit from the Fund’s work there. Through visiting projects dealing with HIV/AIDS, maternal mortality, family planning and young people, they also gained first-hand knowledge of the measures that have been taken to improve the situation in Mozambique, one of the world’s poorest countries. The trip was widely covered by Mozambique and Nordic media.

    November 2004
Hanne’s experiences and observations in the field; including her 2002 tour of Nicaragua, inspired her to write her 2004 novel about women in low- to middle-income countries. The book “When I Got Angry” contains in-depth portraits of 15 women from Vietnam, Russia, Nicaragua, Uganda and Egypt.

The objective was to determine the role UNFPA Goodwill Ambassadors could play in mobilizing resources for youth health, education and employment programs in that country.

    March 2001
Hanne-Vibeke competed against other celebrities on the Danish TV show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”. She won and donated the cash prize to the Danish family planning association.
