Occupied Palestinian Territory
The Palestinian society is very young. In 1998,more than half of its population was under 18 years of age. While it poses an extraordinary challenge to the Palestinian services, the figure itself is a strong call for investing in and promoting the participation of young people in the Palestinian society.
Recent research shows that both adults and youths in the Occupied Palestinian Territory are experiencing psychological and social stress. However, among all groups, adolescents have emerged as the most optimistic about their future. Recent data from the Palestinian National Youth Survey show:
- 58.9% of young people (61.9% female and 56.0% male) whose priority concern is continuing their education
- despite the current conflict between Israel and Palestinians, 91.0% of young people (92.4% female and 89.7% male) perceive their future filled with hope and aspirations
- 36.6% of young people generally participate in the decision making process on issues concerning their lives within their respective families
- 11.8% of young people(10.8% female and12.8% male) were subjected to physical violence during the last month and this variable increases with decreased age of the child and or young person
- Although 83.7% heard about HIV/AIDS, only 29.3% of young people (23.9% female and 34.6% male) were able to identify two preventive measures for protection from HIV/AIDS
