Water, along with arable land, is a scarce commodity in much of Mauritania, over-run in the last 30 years by the advancing sands of the Sahara Desert. A dried out river bed is the only source of water for a hundred kilometer radius in the desert between the isolated towns of M'Bout and Kaedi.
